To a large extent the properties of a metal product are determined by its microstructural features. For conventionally processed metal alloys a large body of literature is available on microstructural control. For metals produced with the recently developed additive manufacturing technology, there is still a large knowledge gap on microstructural control.
The PhD student will carry out a research project on the microstructural characteristics of various metallic alloys that are produced by Additive Manufacturing (either by Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) or by Powder Bed Fusion technology). A number of MA samples will be provided to the PhD student, which need to be characterized in detail in terms of the microstructural state variables (grain size, crystallographic phases, grain orientations, dislocations, precipitates etc). The microstructural characterization will primarily be carried out by orientation contrast microscopy (EBSD, 3D-EBSD, TKD etc) or by TEM.
On the basis of the microscopic characterization, the PhD student needs to identify the key microstructural elements that affect the mechanical properties such as strength, ductility, toughness or fatigue resistance. Equally important is to establish the relation with the technical parameters of the AM process (such as input power, heating and cooling rate, printing topology or layer thickness for WAAM). The acquired knowledge will be integrated in a physically based microstructural model that can simulate the observed phenomena.
- The candidate should possess a Master diploma (M.Sc) in Materials Science Engineering (or equivalent) with a strong basis in exact sciences (mathematics, physics and chemistry).
Additional points for recommendation: experience with electron microscopy (particularly SEM) and an introduction in crystallographic aspects of metal science.
